How Our Calculators Work

We want a visitor to be able to reproduce a result with a basic calculator. This page describes the assumptions shared across our tools and the situations in which those assumptions might fail.

Measurements and units

US customary units are the default for our American audience. You can switch to metric values. The browser converts entered dimensional measurements into a common internal unit before running the same formula. Dollar prices remain in US dollars; switching measurement systems does not convert the currency. When a price is specified per square foot, it is converted to a price per square meter during a unit switch.

Area and volume formulas

Rectangular area is length × width. To obtain square feet, both dimensions must be in feet. For thickness expressed in inches, convert to feet by dividing by 12. Cubic feet ÷ 27 gives cubic yards. One board foot is a volume of 144 cubic inches; board feet = thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet ÷ 12.

Waste and purchasing quantities

Cutting, breakage, site variation and settlement can require additional material. An allowance is applied by multiplying the theoretical amount by (1 + allowance percentage ÷ 100). This is an estimate, not a universal recommended amount. Whenever the result describes an item sold only in whole packages, we round up to the next complete tile, box or bag. We do not round down purchasing units.

Product-specific assumptions

Tile boxes are estimated from an entered coverage per case. Concrete bags use illustrative yields of approximately 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 cubic feet for 40 lb, 60 lb and 80 lb sizes. Grout uses a geometrical joint fraction and editable density; grout coverage can differ substantially from product labels. None of these defaults is a statement about a particular manufacturer.

Costs, taxes and professional quotes

Where a cost is shown, it is computed from prices supplied by the visitor. We do not claim to know live local costs. Taxes, delivery, permits and other services are omitted unless explicitly represented by an input. Cost results are planning figures, not binding quotations.

Safety and professional judgment

Volume calculators cannot tell you how to engineer a structure. Subgrade, spans, climate, soil, codes and reinforcement can matter. Before work with safety or code implications, consult qualified local professionals and current product instructions.

Feedback and corrections

If you encounter an unexpected result, send us the tool name, entered values and the expected behavior through our contact page. We assess reported errors and update tool logic when warranted.

Visual layout and purchase quantities are different

The Tile Layout Studio places a rectangular repeating grid of nominal tiles separated by your selected grout joint. Rectangles that cross the room boundary become highlighted cut placements. It does not optimize cut reuse or model non-rectangular rooms. Our material purchase estimate is based on surface area plus a separately chosen allowance; do not confuse the placement count with the number of whole tiles to order.

Manufacturer product data takes precedence

For concrete, the selectable bag yields (approximately 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 cubic feet for 40, 60 and 80 pound bags) follow published example yields. Check the label for your exact mix; QUIKRETE Concrete Mix product data provides representative yields. For grout, use the manufacturer coverage per bag for the exact product and joint dimensions whenever possible; geometry-based volume × density is only a rough fallback.

Private project board

Saved material estimates are stored in your device browser, not a MeasureHatch server. A saved line records an estimate snapshot; changing the original calculator does not update that snapshot. Prices are only included when entered and may overlap across different estimates. Export a local backup if you need a durable record.
