How to use this tile calculator

  1. Enter your project dimensions and choose US or metric units.
  2. Check the product coverage or yield on its packaging. Optional prices are in USD.
  3. Select Calculate to see your estimate. If you change measurements, calculate again.
  4. Save the valid result to your project board, copy its link or print it.

The calculation explained

For a rectangular room, multiply length by width to get area. Divide that area by the area of one tile (in the same units), then increase the result by a chosen allowance for cuts and breakage. Always round the final tile count up.

Area = length × width. Tiles = ceil(area × (1 + waste / 100) / tile area). Boxes = ceil(area × (1 + waste / 100) / box coverage).

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room covers 120 square feet. With 12 × 12 inch tiles, one tile covers 1 square foot. Adding 10% for cuts results in 132 individual tiles. If each box covers 15 square feet, the estimate is 9 boxes.

What to check before you buy

For diagonal layouts, borders, herringbone patterns, small offcuts or unusually shaped spaces, a 10% allowance may not be enough. Use 15–20% as a starting sensitivity check, then confirm the layout and material lot with the supplier.

These figures are estimates, not final purchase orders, professional installation instructions or engineering advice. The product packaging and site conditions take precedence over default values. When in doubt, confirm with a qualified contractor, supplier or relevant professional.

Frequently asked questions

Do grout joints change the tile count?

Yes. Grout joints change the layout grid and can change which pieces require trimming. For a more detailed preview, use our Tile Layout Studio. Always confirm layout measurements and actual product dimensions.

Should I round tile boxes up?

Yes. Boxes are sold in complete quantities, so the tool rounds up using the coverage printed on the box.

Does this calculate wall and floor tile?

It works for rectangular surfaces. Measure each surface separately and add the estimates if the tile sizes or patterns differ.

Metric worked example

A 4 × 3 m room has 12 m². With 60 × 60 cm tiles and 10% extra, plan for 37 tiles. At 2 m² per box, buy 7 boxes.
