How to use this backsplash tile calculator
- Enter your project dimensions and choose US or metric units.
- Check the product coverage or yield on its packaging. Optional prices are in USD.
- Select Calculate to see your estimate. If you change measurements, calculate again.
- Save the valid result to your project board, copy its link or print it.
The calculation explained
Multiply the backsplash run in feet by its height in feet. If the height is given in inches, divide by 12 first. Subtract major excluded surfaces, add a cut allowance, and divide by the coverage of one tile.
Worked example
A 12 ft counter run with an 18 in backsplash has 12 × (18 ÷ 12) = 18 square feet. At a 15% allowance, allow for 20.7 square feet of tile coverage.
What to check before you buy
A backsplash with multiple sections should be split into runs. Outlets, corners, windows and diagonal layouts cause cuts; the real wastage rate depends on the chosen pattern and tile format.
These figures are estimates, not final purchase orders, professional installation instructions or engineering advice. The product packaging and site conditions take precedence over default values. When in doubt, confirm with a qualified contractor, supplier or relevant professional.
Frequently asked questions
Do I subtract outlets?
For a quick estimate, small electrical outlets are usually handled by the waste allowance rather than individually subtracted. Large windows or non-tiled sections can be excluded.
What if backsplash height changes?
Calculate each height section separately and add the rounded purchasing quantities.
Can I use peel-and-stick tile?
Yes for area planning, but use the coverage listed by the peel-and-stick tile product rather than assuming a ceramic box size.

Metric worked example
A 3 m run with a 60 cm backsplash height covers 1.8 m². With 15% extra, allow 2.07 m²: 3 boxes if each box covers 1 m².
