The calculation explained
The gross wall surface in a standard three-wall alcove is (back-wall width + 2 × side-wall depth) × tiled height. Subtract openings. Then apply waste allowance and divide by the area of an individual tile.
Worked example
A shower with a 5 ft back wall, two 3 ft side walls, and 7 ft tiled height has (5 + 3 + 3) × 7 = 77 square feet of wall. With no openings and 15% extra, plan for about 88.55 square feet of tile coverage.
What to check before you buy
Do not include the shower floor in the wall estimate. Shelves, niches, benches and mosaics often use different tile types and should be measured on their own. Waterproofing and substrate are separate from tile quantity.
These figures are estimates, not final purchase orders, professional installation instructions or engineering advice. The product packaging and site conditions take precedence over default values. When in doubt, confirm with a qualified contractor, supplier or relevant professional.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include the shower floor?
No. This tool estimates the three vertical walls only. Use the general tile calculator separately for the floor.
How do I handle a niche or window?
Subtract a large opening from the field provided, and measure separately any added tiled side faces inside the niche.
Does this cover two-wall showers?
This calculator assumes a three-wall alcove. Measure atypical shower layouts as separate rectangular walls and use the general tile calculator.

Metric worked example
A 1.5 m back wall, two 1 m side walls and a 2.4 m tiled height cover 8.4 m² before openings. With 15% extra and 2 m² boxes, plan for 5 boxes.
